Question Three
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
Distributors have the job of finding and delivering the largest possible audience for a film. There is high competition market place for screen time, media space and audience interest. There are around 10 new films advertised per week and over 500 produced each year.
We would like to show our film in the cinema initially, with the potential to make it available on DVD and television. It may seem old fashioned in the multimedia age but according to the Film Distributors Association, “a cinema release has long been, and remains, the most effective way to bestow stature on a film and create demand to see it”. The cinema is a place known to where filmmakers “aspire to have their films showcased” According to the Film Distributor’s Association, the people who attend the cinemas most are teenagers, students and young adults this is good as these are our target audience.
We thought about the following questions, to promote our film to potential distributors ‘who is the audience?’ ‘Do the story, characters and situation grip the intended audience?’ ‘Does the film ‘deliver’ and risk of a theatrical release?’ We believe that our thriller, will appeal to our target audience and below other companies we think might be suitable to help us produce it.
SEE-SAW PRODUCTIONS
Based in London and Sydney, See-Saw was founded by producers Emile Sherman and Iain Canning. Since inception in 2008, See-Saw has produced The King's Speech, Oranges and Sunshine, The Kings of Mykonos and Linear. Emile and Iain's previous productions include Control, Disgrace, Hunger, Candy and $9.99.
Holly and I feel that See-Saw productions a growing British Film making company would be interested in our media product as they have produced other films like The Kings Speech which attracted a wide audience both in the UK and overseas. See-Saw productions could again conjoin with Momentum Pictures, with whom they have a first look deal, or even Universal Studios to distribute our film and be able to market the film in both England and America like it did with The Kings Speech. The fact of our film being British could attract people to buy our film because they have expectations of it having a bit of edginess to it. We could also then apply to the UK film council for funding. Also cinemas like Odeon give ‘points’ to people which is an incentive to watch more British films. Further more Momentum Pictures has experience of distributing other successful horror films such as Insidious and the thriller The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest.

Question 4
Who would be the audience for your media product?

We targeted our film at teenage girls ranging in age of 12 to 17 year old. We needed to make sure that we fulfilled the expectations and therefore did further research into this age range to find out what they expect in a horror film. We though about including boys in this film and therefore could be more manly, but as we go to an all girls school we decided we had a much better chance of understanding what girls want to see, rather than boys. We decided that we had to make sure that the target audience would be interested in the opening before we put all our time and effort in, then to have to change last minute. We interviewed many people in the age range and told them our brief 25 word synopsis and recorded their reactions. By having a 25 word synopsis, it was very brief but definitely got our story line across. We had very positive feedback and therefore decided our target audience and film idea fitted nicely.

Below is a mood board we created to present our typical audience member:
